Consulting: What Do We Do?

Every semester, the Consulting Committee aims to provide associates with experience in solving case studies for interviews and in a real world consulting challenge. Our Committee engages in pro-bono CSR-related consulting projects with major Bay Area businesses as clients. Associates will engage in extensive research and brainstorming in order to distill strategic recommendations for clients. Our projects are also advised by consultants from Deloitte and MBA students from the Haas School of Business. Together, our committee works hard to promote social good through business.

Finally, as an associate, you can access all the services offered by the international Net Impact organization, including Issues In Depth calls with professionals on topics related to CSR, the annual Net Impact Conference, various newsletters, job postings, and an expansive member database.

Case Study 1:

The Consulting Team conducted extensive research in order to identify an ideal target segment for the client. The Team then drafted a comprehensive marketing plan on how to reach this segment, including information on 1) who the segment consists of and an example person, 2) advertising strategies and pricing information, and 3) Web design and collateral materials, including samples. Based on our recommendations, the client has completely redesigned their Web site and is now better able to reach and serve the target customer.

Case Study 2:

The Team was approached with a unique challenge: to research and understand how CSR programs were working in competing companies, and then take this information in order to develop a signature campaign for the client. To do this, first, the Team developed a proprietary benchmarking technique, which was used to measure CSR programs and performance in nine competing companies. From this information the Team also drafted a signature CSR program that would successfully differentiate the offering of the client from those of its competitors. The client has distributed our benchmarking report internally, and is using the information to further develop our signature CSR program idea.

Case Study 3:

For this client, the Team researched and ranked 10 cities viable for future expansion. Over the course of the semester, the Team compiled a 60 page report that detailed, in step-by-step process, the exact procedures needed to establish a new chapter in each of the top two cities. Steps included how to incorporate, file for tax exemption, conduct outreach, etc. In addition, the Team created a financial model that analyzed profit sensitivity to various membership structures. Currently, the client is finalizing the report for distribution to interested contacts in the top 10 cities.
